Dr A.K. (Tony) Clarke

The Chairman of REMEDI is Dr Tony Clarke, a position he has held since 1988.

He is Medical Director of the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases NHS Foundation Trust, Bath, where he is also Consultant in Rheumatology and Rehabilitation and Director of Rehabilitation. He was appointed a Consultant in Bath in1997.

He was educated at Colfe’s Grammar School in Lewisham, London and received his medical training at the London Hospital Medical College, where he obtained a B.Sc. in Physiology in 1965, and qualified in Medicine in 1968. He undertook post-graduate training at the London, Bethnal Green, Kings College, and Lewisham Hospitals before moving to Bath, where he was appointed specifically to establish the National Centre in Rehabilitation. As a result of this he set up the Bath Head Injury Unit, as well as starting new services in Paediatric Rheumatology, Sports Medicine and Orthotics. He was also heavily involved in the establishment of the Pain Management Unit, the G.P. Distance Learning Course (at the University of Bath) and the new Chronic Fatigue Service for the Bath Clinical Area.

As Medical Director of the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases he has successfully steered the Hospital to Trust status, to three stars in the evaluation of Trusts and now to its new status as a Foundation Trust. In the past twelve years the Trust activity has more than trebled and the past year alone five new consultants have been appointed, nearly doubling the number.

Dr Clarke’s clinical interests include general rheumatology, ankylosing spondylitis, fibromyalgia and fatigue syndromes, and neuro-rehabilitation. His research interests include community rehabilitation, technical aids for disabled people and the drug therapy of arthritis. He has supported the major nationally important research programmes in rheumatology and pain in Bath and, through his Chairmanship of REMEDI, a wide range of research topics throughout Britain.

Outside Bath - Dr Clarke is Civil Consultant in Rheumatology and Rehabilitation to the Royal Air Force, a Member of the Central Consultants and Specialists Medical Specialities Sub-Committee, Past-President of the British Society of Rehabilitation Medicine and the South Wales, South West and Rheumatology Club, a Member of Council of the National Ankylosing Spondylitis Society and is County Medical Officer for Wiltshire St John Ambulance. He is Chairman of the Projects Committee of the Bath Institute of Medical Engineering, and the Bath REMAP Panel (which brings together engineers and health professionals to produce ‘one-off’ technical solutions for disabled people) and is President of Bath Headway (the self-help group for head injured people) and the Wiltshire Independent Living Centre. He is also a member of the I.R.A. (no, not the Irish organization, but the Indian Rheumatology Association) and regularly visits India for teaching purposes.

Outside medicine - Dr Clarke lives in a small village in Wiltshire, 8 miles from the beautiful city of Bath. He lives with his wife, also a rheumatologist, in a house whose core was built in 1716, together with their ten cats, Yorkshire terrier (Bertie) and about 5 goldfish in the garden pond. Gardening is a major interest, as is golf, which he plays keenly, with a handicap of 28 (rising 40), as well as fine wine and good food. He is also a regular member of his local pub quiz team (but is not very good on football and pop music). In May 2007 he was elected as a Councillor on the Bath and North East Somerset Council.
